Herstory month programming dates back to the early 1990s when the Women's Community Center first moved to the Fire Truck House. This was a month-long calendar of events by both students at the WCC as well as women's voluntary student organizations and other campus departments hosting events about gender equity.
Herstory Month typically took place in April at Stanford. While Women's History Month is March, due to the quarter schedule, finals and spring break often took up most of the month. April was the beginning of spring quarter and a fresh start for programming.
In the spring of 2016, the WCC Directors reviewed the programming areas and determined that while the HERSTORY month programming was a long-standing tradition, both the model and the name were outdated. The reasons for sunsetting Herstory were twofold: 1) "HERstory" only focused on one specific gender identity and the WCC had expanded to serve people of all genders and backgrounds, especially the most marginalized genders and 2) The model of a month-long calendar of events was unsustainable and ineffective in highlighting relevant issues. We didn't want to limit the awareness and programming to one month.
The WCC is so grateful for all of the students, faculty, and staff who have contributed to HERSTORY programming over the years and below are some posters from various HERSTORY Months.
