FEMINIST NARRATIVES PROGRAM
In the spring of 2016, the WCC Directors, Faith Kazmi and Marta Hanson, reviewed our programming areas and determined that while the HERSTORY month programming was a long-standing tradition, both the model and the name were outdated. The reasons for sun-setting Herstory were twofold: 1) "HERstory" only focused on the use of one specific gender pronoun and as an organization focused on gender equity, strived to be more inclusive and 2) the model of a month-long calendar of events was unsustainable and ineffective in highlighting relevant issues. As a result - we developed a new programmatic area: FEMINIST NARRATIVES. The format was to be determined, but the idea would be that the WCC would highlight and celebrate feminist narratives throughout the year. In the 2016-17 academic year, Mysia Anderson and Nya Hughes were the first students to be the Feminist Narratives program coordinators and they developed a WCC podcast "Feminist Voices" as part of the programming. The following year (2017-18), Lillian Bornstein and Taylor Crutison added a Zine to the mix that included visual art, poetry and works from the larger community in a community hand crafted zine. |
The Feminist Narratives project seeks to uplift feminist voices and experiences across backgrounds and disciplines, at Stanford and beyond. Recently, the Feminist Narratives podcast has produced the Feminist Voices podcast and a Feminist Narratives Zine. The Feminist Voices podcast, a project of the WCC Feminist Narratives Project, seeks to amplify, share, learn, and educate listeners about stories of feminist resistance and innovation through the podcast medium.
